As yoga instructors we want to help and guide our students into the correct anatomical positioning of their joints and bones in the classical asanas. "Verbal instructions are always the best mode to communicate to our students; but sometimes the verbal instruction needs more clarity or reinforcement - via adjustment. As teachers, we must “train our eyes to see” a student’s limitations and advise/assist with compassion and wisdom. This art takes years of practice to develop, but we will begin to learn to see and to advise. We will also discuss when and where it may not be appropriate to touch or adjust our students."Always and firstly, we must ask permission of our students before adjusting their bodies. For instance: “I would like to give you some support, and/or touch, contact your body, to help you receive the greatest benefit of this pose – is that ok?” This is especially important when it comes to the neck, shoulders and hip joints.

10 Nov 2006 (Friday)
9.00am to 11.30am Releasing the Neck (2.5 hrs)
Most beginning students tend to compress the neck in even the most basic Standing Poses. In this session, we will analyze the correct alignment of the neck. We will practice and receive neck-lengthening adjustments in Standing Poses, Inverted Poses (i.e Headstand and Shoulderstand). And more importantly, we will practice preparation poses to free the neck before achieving the completed poses which most challenge the neck area.

2.00pm to 4.30pm Open the Shoulders (2.5hrs)
Holding tension in the inner shoulders is very common for both male and female students. In adjusting our students in the shoulder area, we must support the bone nearest the source of tension. This “tightness” normally occurs in the ligaments and connective tissue. When the hard, solid bone is supported, the soft connective tissue attaching to that bone will release more easily. As with the Neck Adjustment session, we will take turns as student and teacher, receiving and giving neck-freeing adjustments.

9.00am to 11.30am Relieve the Lower Back (2.5hrs)
For the greatest freedom in the lower back (Lumbar spine) we must analyze the tilt of the pelvis. Often in the action of forward bending, an adjustment at the hip joints will allow the pelvis more movement and therefore the lower back more elongation. We will practice forward bends and the “grounding of the femur bone” at the hip joint - to allow the lower back this freedom. We will alternate as teacher and student, and discuss the challenges for students with tight hamstring muscles that in turn limit the tilt of the pelvi.

2.00pm to 4.30pm Hyper-Extended Elbows and Knees (2.5hrs)
For the Asian anatomy, hyper-extension in the elbow joint is very common. This is hereditary and somewhat of a structural anomaly. When the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) meets the heads of the radius and ulnar (bones of forearm) at an obtuse angle at the elbow joint, the joint becomes unstable and weak. The ligaments are essentially over-stretched. The upper and lower arm bones should meet squarely at the elbow joint especially in weight–bearing poses. We will work with belts and blocks to create the “bone-over-bone” alignment most beneficial in arm balance poses. With this awareness, we can most efficiently adjust our students, and bring that awareness to them.

This hyper-extension in the Asian anatomy is also prevalent in the knee joint. If our students have hyper-extended elbows, it is very likely that their knees also tend to hyper-extend - especially in Standing Poses. We will explore the most important and primary adjustment for the knees in the parallel lines of Tadasana. Other poses that challenge hyper-extension of the knees are: Trikonasana, (Triangle Pose), Ardha Chandrasana, (Half-Moon Pose), and Parivritta Trikonasana (Rotated Triangle Pose). We will work on these poses and learn how to best support the knee joint so that we help our students find the bone-over-bone alignment that is so important in weight bearing on the bones of the legs.

Ann Barros
Ann Barros is a senior Iyengar yoga instructor with over 30 years teaching experience, including 5 years at UCSC, where she introduced the Iyengar tradition to the Santa Cruz, California community. She has led over 40 successful Yoga In Bali tours. She has led workshops both domestically in California and Colorado, and internationally in Singapore, Jamaica, Greece, Mexico, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and China, as well as as her beloved Bali, which has become her second home and remains where her heart is always. Ann first studied with BKS Iyengar in India in 1976 who personally guided her into curing her own scoliosis. She is certified by the Iyengar Yoga Institute of S.F. since 1980, and later that year after studying again in India, first came to Bali. After 30 years of teaching, Ann's eyes are well trained. She works currently with chiropractors in the US. The chiropractic patients work individually with Ann during their stabilization phase of recovery from surgery or injury. Ann has many case histories of helping people - help themselves - toward pain-free living and avoidance of surgery in some cases. Ann's teaching approach is compassionate, yet challenging, with emphasis on precise and careful alignment of the joints for the greatest freedom: strength and flexibility, balance in the body, quieting of the mind, and a soaring of the spirit. Her strong dance background and B.A. in dance from U.C.S.C. combined with her love of art, music, yoga and Hinduism has culminated in her creating a wonderfully balanced life-style and tour program. Those who participate in her special Bali Yoga tours and recent Asia Programs develop a solid foundation and understanding of the poses. Ann gratefully acknowledges her teacher, Shri BKS Iyengar. Ann has led successful Yoga in Bali tours continuously since 1985. As of 2006, she now operates her own studio in the Iyengar tradition in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia; and offers teacher training programs and workshops.
